The NHS is expected to bring 30 new jobs to Dundee, following the opening of the first cyber security hub in Scotland.

The cyber security wing of NHS National Services Scotland will be among the first residents of the new Abertay cyberQuarter at Abertay University in Dundee.

The £ 18 million center will be opened by Scottish Government Minister for Fair Transition, Employment and Fair Work Richard Lochhead, Scottish Office Minister Iain Stewart and University Director Liz Bacon.

Occupying four floors of the Annie Lamont University Building, it will offer space for collaboration between industry and academia and a secure cloud computing infrastructure to be used for specialized online teaching.

Abertay University was the first in the UK to be awarded the National Center for Cyber Security by the UK Government’s Academic Center of Excellence in Cyber Security Education.

Stewart said: “The growing use of online platforms, cloud computing and online shopping means that cyber security is more important than ever.

“There were more than 400 cyber attacks in Scotland between 2020 and 2021, and more than a million incidents of computer misuse are reported across the United Kingdom each year.

“Today’s launch of cyberQuarter further strengthens Abertay’s reputation as a research site and expertise on cybersecurity – an industry that will bring highly skilled work and investment to the region.”

Bacon added: “Today is a truly significant moment for Abertay University as we create a new home for the cybersecurity community in Scotland, around which the sector can be supported to experiment, develop and thrive.

“This first-class hub will, crucially, help Scotland retain the vast amount of graduate talent that comes from Abertay and our partner institutions each year, and will also act as a safe, shared space where new solutions to global cyber challenges can. be addressed to the common good. ”
